ISSUE INTRODUCTION

Article 40

For the NAFL, the 2006 Season is still under full swing. Playoff teams are
currently entering the "Sweet Sixteen" where each of the 16 teams left in
the playoffs will battle it out this weekend to make it one step closer to the
NAFL Championship.

Yet, for those teams not in the playoffs, the rest of the league is getting
an early jump on the off season. That is the case for the Patriots as many
new athletes have already been brought in for individual tryouts and the
Head Coaching hunt is well under way.

Equally interesting will be the off season depth chart moves of the
returning veterans. A number of familiar faces are being considered for
new positions and a few young players may have worked their way into
first place on the off season depth chart after strong rookie campaigns.
THE TEAM
The quarterback carousel was a wild ride in 2006. Ted Klopf's season
ending injury in Chicago created an opportunity for four other
quarterbacks to take a game day snap during the season. With the
number two quarterback on the depth chart, James Hitchcock, having a
season ending injury himself in the first week, the battle for the offensive
helm lasted the rest of the year.

Now, just weeks into the off season, second year player Ryan Striker
looks to be the incumbent starter heading into the early off season free
agent period. Striker played in only two games this season, but his play
was solid enough to warrant the move up the depth chart. The Lakeville
High School product was a first team All-League Quarterback in 2005.
This was his second appearance on the first team list as he was also an
All-League selection as a defensive back in 2004.

While the quarterback positions is starting to take form from a player
already competing at that position, other depth chart battles look to take
place from position movement. Antwan Brooks proved to be the most
consistent blocker at Right Tackle during 2006. Brooks, who was
originally recruited as a TE, took over the RT spot late and wound up
being an anchor on the offensive line. Now it looks like Brooks will be
returned to his natural position of Tight End. Sixth year veteran Andrew
Clark has proven himself to be a very capable Center over the years,
even though he is considered undersized at only 6'1 and 240 pounds.
That size is ideal as an Insider Backer and early signs point to Clark
being added into the defensive units during off season meetings for
development as a linebacker. Several other position changes are
expected, such as Jeff Tody, the 2006 season's starting safety, being
moved to Outside Linebacker. Having veteran players moved to positions
where they may have the opportunity to excel the most may be one of the
key ingredients to a quick turn around from last seasons horrific record.
AROUND THE NAFL
The Great Lakes Region's representative in the NAFL Championship hunt
will be once again decided by the Pittsburgh Colts and Kane County
Eagles. These two teams met in the Regional Championship last season
with KC coming out on top. This time the Colts will host the game, which is
helping give them the confidence that this season may just be different.
ON THE WIRE
The On The Wire section of the Insider is normally saved for free agent
player movements and rookie signnings. This time the people on the wire
are coaches. The Patriots have already received a high number of quality
applicants for the Head Coaching vacancy and have begun initial
interviews. The plan is not to move overly fast this time as it was in 2006.
With former Head Coach Art Sleights' decision to resign as early in the off
season as it was, it gives management plenty enough time to consider all
applicants and think the selection over. The hiring of Sleight was a
relatively fast move after William Donahue was let go in February. With
the team already in training and system studies for the upcoming season
that year, the Patriots were forced to act fast on selecting a replacement.
Now the rush is not so urgent.

The crop of possible candidates already includes several out of state
coaches, a current High School Varsity Coordinator with a State
Championship ring,  three coaches with college coaching experience, and
two current college assistants. Whoever does get the nod this season will
unquestionably have a resume built for success.
